Greece, the country of the Olympian Gods, the Symposium, and the Mysteries honouring Dionysus, the god of wine, has in the last 25 years seen nothing short of a revolution take place in Greek viticulture and wine-making.

The period has coincided with Greece’s membership of the European Union, and has seen the construction of many state-of-the-art wineries equipped with the latest wine-making technology. Young winemakers, many educated abroad – mainly in France – have returned to Greece to use their wine-making skills on creating new wines from the great array of indigenous grape varieties, many of which can trace their origins back to ancient Greece, and more recently from plantings of international grape varieties. The result has been an outpouring of modern wines possessing interesting and distinctive styles.

Greek wine-making has undergone a reawakening and a rebirth and Greek Wine Cellars currently led by Vassili Kourtaki is in the forefront of these developments.
